Ian Murdock 今天在他的 blog 裡又寫了一篇再論 Ubuntu 與 Debian 的文章 Ubuntu vs. Debian, reprise ，進一步地引論他所關心的相容性問題。

Murdock 所期待的

... we must ensure that the various Debian-derived distros are based on compatible packages, not just a set of packages that have a common lineage. A package built on Progeny should work on Linspire; a package built on Linspire should work on Ubuntu; a package built on Ubuntu should work on Progeny. You get the basic idea. ...

應該也是大部分 Debian-family distro 的希望。不過混用 sid 和 sarge 就已經很痛苦了，再要把 ubuntu、progeny、linspire (前身是 Lindows?) 的套件混到一起，問題只會更大。相信 Murdock 的意思不是要專注於解決套件相依性的問題，而是儘可能在設計 distro 套件的架構時，預先避免掉結構上的衝突；至於那些相依性的爛帳，就是發行的時候要處理的問題了。

我對 derived distro 的相容性問題感覺不深，但 Murdock 另外提到

... Debian needs to get sarge out the door as soon as possible, and once sarge is released, Debian should adopt a time-based release cycle as well. ...

關於將來 Debian 的發行應該要有時限，我則是非常同意。像 gentoo 一年出個幾次，或是隔一年半載發行一次都可以，重點是時間間隔要固定。對於要拿 Debian 作實務應用的人來說，確定新版的發行時間之後，才容易 規畫工作時程 ；這實在是非常重要的。

現在想必有一堆工作都被 sarge 卡在半空中；至少我手上就有幾件是這樣。
